In the year 1890 Otto Wagner designed a city development plan for Vienna, but only his urban railroad network was realized.
In the year 1895 plans for the station building of Gersthof were set up and in 1898 construction was completed.
After decades of neglegtion the complete so called Wiener Vorortelinie railway line was renovated according to preservation guidelines of these times and commuter operation reopened in 1987. By this time the building was added to the national register of protected landmarks.
In the year 2014 a significant preservation process got on the way, new structural elements were added - illumination, elevators, safety measures and a guidance system.
Otto Wagner is recognized for using new materials and constructions. Now historic constructions were restored and new materials and constructions added to meet actual needs. Commuters and visitors can enjoy the historic atmosphere, modern amenities of transportation, but also the traditional Vienna coffeehouse next door to the grand foyer.
